Pete Carroll has himself an offensive coordinator opening following the dismissal of Brian Schottenheimer, who found himself on the hot seat following a few notable players talking about the lack of adjustments after losing 30-20 to the Rams in last weekend's Wild Card round.
According to Josina Anderson, one target for the Seahawks may be Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott.
Originally, Elliott was hired to coach the running backs at Clemson by Dabo Swinney in 2011, just a few seasons into Swinney's tenure after Elliott previously coached the wide receivers at Furman (FCS - SC) for a few seasons. Elliott was promoted to co-offensive coordinator in 2015 following the departure of Chad Morris to become the head coach at SMU, and became the sole holder of the coordinator title following Jeff Scott's departure to take over the head coaching job at USF.
Over the last few seasons, Elliott has had his name mentioned for a number of college head coaching jobs, and a handful of NFL head coaching opportunities too. However, he has been known to turn down some of those NFL head coaching interview opportunities that don't feel like "legitimate interviews."
Another candidate that Anderson points out that may be a good fit in Seattle with Pete Carroll is Chargers quarterbacks coach Pep Hamilton.
Would an opportunity to jump to the NFL to work for a guy like Pete Carroll, who will turn 70 this next season, be the right opportunity for Elliott to leave the powerhouse that he has helped build at Clemson? If it is, perhaps the logic is that some time in the NFL under a guy like Carroll, with the offensive weapons that the Seahawks have at their disposal that could make them a Super Bowl contender, will catch the eye of NFL decision makers and give his candidacy for NFL openings further legitimacy.
Or (perhaps more likely) is that Dabo holds on to his Broyles Award-winning play caller because of the culture that they have created, and Clemson continues to reload and compete for national titles with some new faces on offense continuing the winnings ways in Death Valley.
