NAIA program relieves head coach and coordinators of their duties (Dennis Wagner)

A few seasons after leading the program to their only winning season in school history, Briar Cliff (NAIA - IA) has decided to relieve head coach Dennis Wagner of his duties.

The change comes after the program lost 64-0 to Dordt over the weekend to drop to 1-8 on the year.

Wagner was hired in 2017, and went 0-11 in his first year with the program. That year was followed by the school's first winning season with a 6-5 finish in 2018. In his four seasons total with the program, Wagner led the Chargers to a 12-30 record.

"While we are moving a different direction in coaching, I am confident in our student-athletes' future with Briar Cliff University, both on and off the field," athletic director Scandrett said in the press release. "Great opportunities are destined for this program, and I cannot wait to witness the future of Charger football."

Wagner's coaching journey includes stops at Liberty, Nebraska, and Western Carolina while also turning around the Wayne State (D-II - NE) football program in the early 90's.

The release from the school also notes that offensive coordinator Dallas Tidwell, defensive coordinator Titus Brothers and defensive line coach Ulysses Hall have also been let go.

A national search for a new head coach and coordinators is underway, the school shares.
