After a near month-long investigation into racist comments made by defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley, Utah has announced he will remain on staff, with a near 50 percent pay cut and without the title of head coach-in-waiting.
In exchange for keeping his job, Scalley has agreed to wave the multi-year contract extension he signed in December that came with a raise to $1.1 million, instead bringing his salary back to his 2018 pay of $525,000 on a 1-year term.
Scalley, a former All-Mountain West safety for the Utes, has also lost his designation as Kyle Whittingham's heir apparent to become the Utes' next head coach.
Those sanctions stem from a report that Scalley used the N-word in reference to a recruit back in 2013.
"I am truly sorry, and I own up to the hurtful effects of my choice,” Scalley said on June 5. “Through my actions and words going forward, I will demonstrate that my use of that slur in 2013 does not reflect or define who I am or what I stand for. My action is indefensible and I will use my voice and position to bring about meaningful and much-needed change. I accept the University’s suspension, and will use it as a time to reflect on my insensitive comment from 2013 and how I intend to listen and grow from this situation. I am completely against racism, and this will never happen again."
