Like just about everyone else that's playing football this fall, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Southern Miss games will be capped at no greater than 25 percent capacity.
Governor Tate Reeves made the announcement on Thursday, but he also went a step further.
Mississippi will not allow tailgating or any sort of pep rally or organized party in conjunction with football games. This has not been a universal stance--the SEC left it up to each school and local government--but it's one that makes sense. On the risk/reward flow chart, banning gatherings of untested civilians who linger in large clusters for hours on end seems like an easy sacrifice in service of the ultimate goal.
Still, Reeves knew it wouldn't be popular, so he coated the bitter pill with a dash of honey.
"I'd still rather be in the SEC with no tailgates," he tweeted, "than PAC-12 or Big 10 with no football."
Here's hoping Reeves is proven correct next month.
