Kentucky began Saturday's game with Vanderbilt by lining up without a left guard to honor the memory of Wildcats offensive line coach John Schlarman. Scharlman died on Thursday after a long battle with cancer. He was 45 years old.
Schlarman was a 4-year starter at left guard for Kentucky from 1994-97, earning All-SEC honors in 1997.
After taking the penalty, which Vanderbilt declined, left tackle Landon Young entered the game wearing No. 65, Scharlman's number as a Wildcat.
"I'm heartbroken to learn about the passing of my friend, John Schlarman," Mark Stoops said upon Schlarman's passing. "My prayers go out to LeeAnne and the kids, Joseph, Benjamin, Matthew and Evelyn, through this very difficult time.
"John was everything we all strive to be -- honest, tough, fair, respected. Kentucky football won't be the same without him but his legacy will never fade. He was a fighter and we will strive every day to honor his warrior spirit."
Kentucky won the game, 38-35. The Wildcats rushed for 308 yards and three touchdowns on 8.8 yards per carry in the win.
