The Cowboys have fired Jason Garrett (Dallas Cowboys)

After a months of speculation and a week of waiting, the Dallas Cowboys have fired Jason Garrett.

Why the news came down today instead of last Sunday evening is a mystery only Jerry Jones himself can solve, but the writing on the wall has morphed from lead to ink.

“We are extremely grateful to Jason Garrett for his more than 20 years of service to the Dallas Cowboys as a player, assistant coach and head coach,” Jerry Jones said. “His level of commitment, character and dedication to this organization has been outstanding at every stage of his career.”

The Cowboys dragged the process out a week out of "an abundance of respect" as Ed Werder tweeted Thursday night, but the process entered its second phase over the weekend as former Packers head coach Mike McCarthy and former Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis sat for interviews, with Garrett still technically the Cowboys' head coach.

His contract is set to expire on Jan. 14.

Garrett went 85-67 in nine and a half seasons as the Cowboys' head coach. The impending search will be the Cowboys' first since 2007, a process that led to then-San Diego Chargers defensive coordinator Wade Phillips getting the job -- with Garrett being named his offensive coordinator before Phillips got the head job.
