Georgia State's new defensive coordinator will reportedly come from the SEC

After two seasons at Arkansas working in the secondary, Deron Wilson is reportedly leaving for a defensive play calling opportunity.

Wilson is expected to become the new defensive coordinator at Georgia State, according to CBS Sports.

A standout corner at Southern Miss, Wilson has spent the past two seasons working with the Arkansas secondary, where he made an immediate impact in improving the passing yards allowed, ranking near the top of the SEC in 2023.

He joined the Razorbacks staff after a season at Florida in a quality control role where he worked with the Gators corners.

The opportunity to call the defense at Georgia State marks a first for Wilson at the FBS level, but won't be the first time he has called the shots for a defense.

He spent two seasons as the defensive coordinator at McNeese State, for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. Wilson led a defense that improved in points per game, as well as rushing and passing yards per game.

At Georgia State, he takes over a defense that ranked 117th nationally last fall, allowing nearly 44 points per game, while ranking 123rd in run defense as well.
