During the weekend, sources told FootballScoop that Dan Quinn would not be an option for Steve Sarkisian’s initial Texas staff because Quinn preferred to remain in the NFL.

Now an NFL report from ESPN is shedding light on Quinn’s expected next move. Per Adam Schefter and Todd Archer, Dan Quinn is the favorite to become the Cowboys defensive coordinator moving into Year 2 under Mike McCarthy.

This move presents intrigue on a pair of fronts: the well-regarded Quinn had been considered a candidate with multiple NFL franchises, sources told FootballScoop on Saturday. It puts the Cowboys on the verge of adding a veteran coordinator and former head coach who guided the Atlanta Falcons to the Super Bowl — where the team blew the largest lead in Super Bowl history in a loss to the New England Patriots.

Now, Tosh Lupoi remains a prominent candidate to become Sarkisian’s defensive play-caller for the Longhorns. Lupoi, Quinn and Sarkisian all have common paths and connections to each other between either the NFL’s Falcons and college powerhouse Alabama.

Sources told FootballScoop last week that Sarkisian was likely to wait until after Alabama faces Ohio State tonight in the College Football Playoffs title game to name his Texas defensive coordinator.

Mississippi State defensive coordinator Zach Arnett and Arkansas defensive coordinator Barry Odom have both been on Sark's radar as well.

As always, stay tuned to The Scoop for the latest coaching news.
