Bill Maskill has retired after 22 seasons as the head coach at Midwestern State, the program announced Sunday.
Midwestern State is a Division II school in Wichita Falls, Texas. The Mustangs compete in the Lone Star Conference.
"We owe a debt of gratitude to coach for his tremendous leadership over the past 22 years," MSU Director of Athletics Kyle Williams said. "MSU is proud of his wins, but his guidance through life lessons and the growth of our student-athletes was most impactful. We wish he and his wife, Mary Helen, all the best in the exciting days ahead."
Maskill leaves with 160 wins, the most in MSU history. Furthermore, Maskill ripped off 17 consecutive winning seasons to begin his tenure and 19 total; the Mustangs enjoyed eight winning campaigns in the 25 seasons prior to his arrival.
Maskill's 160 wins are the second most in Lone Star Conference history, trailing only College Football Hall of Famer Ron Harms's 172 wins at Texas A&M-Kingsville. He won five conference titles at MSU, including as recently as 2021.
With Maskill moving on, longtime defensive coordinator Rich Renner was promoted to head coach.
Renner spent 18 years assisting Maskill, and served as defensive coordinator since 2008.
"Midwestern State is thrilled to announce the hiring of as our next head football coach," said Williams. "Rich's love for the game is evident and his love for MSU is unparalleled. His intimate knowledge of our current staff and players position him to continue to build upon past successes, while furthering the MSU program. We welcome Rich, wife Jennifer, daughter Addison, and son Grant. MSU Football is in good hands."
