Bears GM Ryan Poles openly shared to expect the organization to talk to some outside the box candidates for their head coaching vacancy, and while the majority of their interviews have been with top coordinators and former head coaches, they've certainly ventured off the beaten path as advertised with interviews with former Stanford head coach David Shaw and Giants quarterbacks coach (and former Northwestern quarterback) Mike Kafka.
The latest unexpected name to enter that mix came last night, when Jay Glazer shared that Eddie George had an interview set.
George has spent the past four seasons turning around the program at Tennessee State, where he led the Tigers to a 9-win season this past fall at the FCS level.
The former Titans (and Oilers) running back went 5-6, then 4-7 and then 6-5 before their breakout 9-4 2024 campaign this past fall where the Tigers won the Big South-OVC and he earned Coach of the Year honors in the league.
A 2011 inductee into the College Football Hall of Fame, what George lacks in coaching experience (Tennessee State is his first coaching job), his rapid upward trajectory more than makes up for.
With the season ending for the Detroit Lions, where Ben Johnson (OC) and Aaron Glenn (DC) now become availble for in-person interviews, you can expect these NFL head coaching searches to heat up in a hurry.
