After initially retaining Brian Early as defensive line coach, Willie Fritz eventually lost the top defensive line coach when a job with Eli Dinkwitz and Missouri brought his talents to the SEC.
With a key spot on defense to fill, Joseph Duarte shares that Willie Fritz is nearing a hire of a veteran defensive line presence.
Duarte says that Fritz is close to adding Wyoming's Oscar Giles to the staff to fill the defensive line spot.
Giles was elevated to associate head coach heading into the 2023 season, and served as Craig Bohl's defensive run-game coordinator / defensive tackles coach.
He has 23 seasons of college coaching experience, and was the defensive line coach at Texas for four seasons prior to arriving in Laramie. He also clocked a previous stop in Austin, spending nine seasons on the Longhorns staff working with defensive ends and assisting with special teams under Mack Brown from 2005-13, and was part of the program's epic national title run in 2005.
This will mark a return to Houston for Giles, who spent a few seasons under Tom Herman with the Coogs in 2015 and 2016.
He has additional stops at SMU and Louisiana Tech as well.
