Video: High school coach goes viral with challenge to adults (Junction City)

This season marks the 30th year leading the Junction City (KS) football program for Randall Zimmerman.

He's touched and transformed a ton of lives over those years, and recently took some time in front of the camera to send a challenge out to coaches, and adults to step up and teach more than the sport they're involved in.

"Sometimes we get this all mixed up. We think this is about sport. We think it's about the sport of football, the sport of basketball, we are cheating our kids in the biggest way if it's just coaching the sport."

"I am so frustrated sometimes with people who cannot completely get that, because this is an extension of the classroom. This is educational based activities. It was put in public education to help with character building skills, and those kinds of things. We need as many kids as possible to be out for activities and sports, and all those types of things. Sport is just the nugget to get them out to teach them life skills.

"Of the 1.1 million that play football, 7.6% will play beyond high school. That's at the NAIA level, Division III, Division II, FCS, and that's a true statistic."

That statistic, though slightly inflated, is taken from the NCAA, who report that 7.3% of athletes go on to play college football.

There's a more important number to Zimmerman though, and that number is 100%.

"God willing, 100% of them will be adults. What kind of adults do we want to live around? We've got to get this figured out as adults working with our youth."

"I get so frustrated seeing what happens with all the club stuff, and all the pressure on these kids to play one sport and looking at high schools as a stepping stone for college, and what are we doing to get them ready to compete in life?"

"I could go on and on an on. I am so frustrated watching adults work with kids."

"We need to get this in perspective and stop letting this get out of hand for our kids, because our kids deserve it. Not just the kids in our community, but the kids in every community. We need to do everything we can to draw more in."
