The mere mention of coaching stipends among a group of high school coaches is destined to bring up some strong feelings.
Feelings so strong that states like Florida, who have grown sick of losing some of their top coaching talent to nearby states like Alabama, Georgia and Texas have created a movement to address the issue.
In a few states, coaching stipends can reach a figure that most can only describe as staggering, especially considering the stipend for head coaches in most states fall in the range of $3k - $12k.
Total compensation for high school coaches gets revealed by local outlets in those aforementioned states on an almost annual basis now, and AL.com recently provided a look at some of the highest compensated coaches at the 7A level in the state.
Their allotted "coaching supplements" are, well, eye popping.
Between Thompson HS and Central, who pay their coaches the most, those two programs own every state title at the 7A title thus far dating back to 2017, when it was won by Hoover HS .
For some perspective as you digest these numbers, as of this current year, the average yearly salary of an individual living in Alabama is $49,274 (or about $23.69 per hour.)
