Former Vols player and head coach Johnny Majors has passed at age 85.
Majors starred as a player at Tennessee as a two-time SEC MVP (1955 and 1956), and was an All American in 1956.
As a coach, Majors did got his start as a head coach at Iowa State in 1968 and spent a few seasons with the Cyclones before leaving for Pitt from 1973-76. At Pitt in 1976, Majors led the Panthers to a national title before leaving for the opportunity to lead his alma mater.
Majors is perhaps best known for his 16-year tenure as the leader of the Vols where he went 116-62-8 with three top ten finishes and a handful of bowl wins before being forced to resign. He led the Vols to three SEC titles in 1985, 1989 and 1990, but fell just short of a national title.
Majors returned to Pitt as the head coach in 1993, but never matched the success he had during his first tenure there or with the Vols and retired from coaching after the 1996 season.
In 1987 Majors was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a player.
Overall, as a head coach, Majors went 185-137-10 after stints at Iowa State, Tennessee, and two stints at Pitt.
His coaching tree is an impressive one, and includes Phil Fulmer, Daryl Dickey, David Cutcliffe, Dom Capers, Curt Cignetti, Jon Gruden, Jimmy Johnson, Al Saunders, Jackie Sherrill, Kevin Steele, Dave Wannstedt, and Ron Zook.
This week has been a rough one for coaching legends, as earlier this week Auburn lost coaching icon Pat Dye.
