Steelers ink Mike Tomlin to extension (Pittsburgh Steelers)

The Pittsburgh Steelers have announced this afternoon that they have inked veteran head coach Mike Tomlin to an extension.

"Mike Tomlin's leadership and commitment to the Steelers have been pivotal to our success during his first 17 years as head coach," Steelers President Art Rooney II shared in the team's release.

"Extending his contract for three more years reflects our confidence in his ability to guide the team back to winning playoff games and championships, while continuing our tradition of success."

The 3-year extension locks Tomlin in through the 2027 season.

This fall will mark 18th season leading the franchise, and he's only the third coach the team has ever had.

Impressively, the veteran coach has never had a losing season since being selected to succeed Bill Cowher as head coach prior to the 2007 season, and he led the Steelers to a Super Bowl title in year two.

The team is coming off a 10-7 season, but if the fan base has a gripe it's early exits from the playoffs, or just missing the playoff cut. A total of seven of Tomlin's 11 playoff appearances have resulted in one-and-done playoff exits.

2016 marked the last time the team made it past the first weekend of the playoffs, and that year they lost to the Patriots in the AFC title game.

This off season, Tomlin brought in former Falcons head coach Arthur Smith as the team's new offensive coordinator after parting ways with Matt Canada in late November after struggling offensively last season.
