Dave Clawson is stepping down as the head coach at Wake Forest, sources told FootballScoop on Monday. ESPN's Pete Thamel first reported the news.
Clawson will move into an advisory role with the university after spending 11 seasons as its head coach.
Clawson, 57, built a career winning at hard-to-win places. He went 29-29 from 1999-03 at Fordham, 29-20 from 2004-07 at Richmond, 32-31 from 2009-13 at Bowling Green, and 67-69 over the past 11 campaigns at Wake Forest.
He is the only coach to win 10 games at four different Division I institutions.
Clawson was the first Fordham coach to post a .500 mark over more than one season since Jim Crowley did so from 1933-41 (the school did not sponsor football from 1955 to 1988). And yntil Clawson got there, no Richmond coach had left with a winning record since Frank Jones did so from 1966-73.
Clawson took the Demon Deacons to seven consecutive bowl games from 2016-22, and his 11-3 2021 squad played for the ACC Championship and finished No. 15 in the AP poll. His .493 winning percentage is the highest by a Wake Forest head coach since Peahead Walker posted a .597 mark from 1937-50.

Update: Clawson and Wake Forest have announced the move.
"Coaching at Wake Forest has been the honor of my career," Clawson said. "This is a special place with extraordinary people, and I am deeply grateful for the relationships I've built over the last 11 years. Together, we achieved things that many thought impossible, and I step down knowing I gave everything I had for this program and University. I want to thank our players, coaches and staff for their unwavering support and dedication since my arrival to help build a sustainable winning program. With that, I am so grateful for our student body, fans and so many special Wake Foresters who invested their time, efforts and money into helping us win. While this chapter is ending, my pride in what we've built here will never fade. After completing my 25th season as a head coach and 36th-straight in college football, the timing is right for me and my family to step away into this new role within Wake Forest University."
