Brett Watson is expected to be Stephen F. Austin's next defensive ends coach, sources told FootballScoop on Thursday.
Watson returns to Texas after spending 2018-21 as the defensive tackles coach under Eric Morris at Incarnate Word. There, he helped the Cardinals make their first two FCS playoff appearances, including a 10-3 season with their first Southland Conference title and their first FCS playoff victory.
Ironically, UIW defeated SFA 35-28 in overtime to earn that playoff victory.
The move reunites Watson with his college coach. He played at West Texas A&M from 2006-09, when the Buffaloes were coordinated by SFA head coach Colby Carthel. Watson later returned to WT in 2013 as assistant head coach, defensive line coach, recruiting coordinator and NFL liaison through 2015.
Watson spent 2016-17 as the defensive line coach and junior college recruiting coordinator at Southeastern Oklahoma State.
He was a defensive quality control coach at North Dakota State in 2022, helping the Bison reach the FCS national title game.
Watson joins an SFA program that won the WAC title in 2022.
