Derek Shay's coached at one of the most prestigious prep programs anywhere in America, IMG Academy, and he's likewise logged time at a pair of Southeastern Conference schools.
Now Shay is set to join the staff of one of college football's rising head coaching stars.
Sources with direct knowledge tell FootballScoop that Shay is leaving his post as a senior offensive analyst at Missouri to join Charles Huff's Marshall staff as the Thundering Herd's tight ends coach.
Prior to his work the past year-plus on Eli Drinkwitz's Missouri staff, Shay spent time as an graduate assistant who worked with the tight ends room at LSU.
Shay also has coached at Eastern Illinois, McNeese State and Bowling Green in addition to his work at the Florida-based IMG Academy.
A former Dino Babers understudy, Shay also has high school coaching experience at one of the top prep programs in Indiana -- Warren Central High School in Indianapolis.
Since taking over at Marshall, Huff has emerged as one of college football's rising stars. In addition to an historic win at Notre Dame in the first month of the 2022 season, Huff helped Marshall to a nine-win season that included wins in the Herd's final five games. Huff honed his reputation as an assistant at Penn State, Vanderbilt, Alabama and Mississippi State, among other stops, before getting his breakthrough opportunity atop the Herd.
Marshall, coming off its win against UConn in the season-ending Myrtle Beach Bowl, opens its 2023 against the University of Albany before a pair of compelling matchups on the road at East Carolina and then home against Virginia Tech.
