Sean McDermott will be the new head coach of the Buffalo Bills, the club has announced.
McDermott has served as the Carolina Panthers' defensive coordinator from 2011 through this season. He helped the Panthers win the NFC championship last season. Prior to Carolina, McDermott spent more than a dozen years in the Philadelphia Eagles' organization, where he rose from a scouting administrative coordinator in 1999 to defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach from 2009-10.
At Buffalo, McDermott will look to end the Bills' NFL-longest streak of 18 consecutive seasons without reaching the playoffs. The Bills have cycled through six straight coaches without reaching the postseason, most recently Rex Ryan, who was dismissed after compiling a 15-16 mark in two seasons on the job.
McDermott will be the third NFL coach hired this cycle, following Jacksonville's Doug Marrone and Denver's Vance Joseph, who was announced earlier today.
