Shane Montgomery is expected to join Mo Linguist's new Buffalo staff as offensive coordinator, according to a report Wednesday from ESPN's Adam Rittenberg.
Montgomery is fresh off a run to the FCS semifinals with James Madison. Though the Dukes were ousted by Sam Houston, Montgomery's offense posted 35 points with 23 first downs and 430 yards of offense, out-gaining the Bearkats by nearly 100 yards.
Montgomery joined the JMU staff in December of 2018 and, in his one full season on the staff, JMU finished third in scoring, 10th in total offense, and among the top 10 in a plethora of categories. From his JMU bio:
The Dukes led the country in completion percentage (70.6%) and fourth-down offense (88.9%) while also ranking second on third down (53.6%), third in first downs (24.81), fourth in pass efficiency (169.44), sixth in the red zone (91.7%), seventh in time of possession (33:14) and 10th in rushing (242.9).
Prior to James Madison, Montgomery spent one season as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Charlotte and eight at Youngstown State. He helped the Penguins reach the FCS championship in 2016, where they ironically lost to James Madison.
Montgomery has nine seasons' worth of experience in the MAC, including eight at Miami (Ohio). After developing Ben Roethlisberger into a first-round pick, Montgomery was elevated to the RedHawks' head coaching position in 2005. He led the Hawks to a share of two division titles in his four seasons at the helm. He then spent the 2009 campaign as the offensive coordinator at Akron.
Montgomery will join a new staff that saw the addition of Joe Cauthen as defensive coordinator over the weekend.
