Chargers head coach Mike McCoy will not return to lead the Chargers next season, the club announced Sunday evening.
“Mike McCoy is a man of high character, and we thank him for his dedication to the Chargers,” said Chargers president of football operations John Spanos. “The decision to dismiss Mike was made in the best interests of our franchise. Our team’s disappointing performance has not matched this team’s potential and has fallen short of the demanding standards that we seek to impose throughout our organization. Our comprehensive search for a new head coach begins immediately.”
McCoy took over Chargers heading into the 2013 season, and in his first two years he led the team to 9-7 records in back-to-back years. In 2015, the win total dropped to 4-12, and this year the Chargers have battled some major injury issues to finish 5-11.
McCoy leaves San Diego with a 27-37 mark -- 18-14 in 2013-14 and 9-23 in 2015-16 -- with one playoff experience and a 7-17 record against the AFC West, as the club noted in its official release announcing McCoy's dismissal.
As an assistant, McCoy had the opportunity to work under George Seifert, John Fox, and Josh McDaniels.
McCoy's past coaching journey has been littered with NFL experience from the beginning, starting in Carolina where he got started as an offensive assistant in 2000 before being promoted to receivers coach the next year. He eventually took over coaching the quarterbacks in Carolina in 2004, added passing game coordinator title in 2007, and left for the offensive coordinator job with the Broncos in 2009 before leaving for the Chargers head coaching job in 2013.
