Kevin Wilson returning to Oklahoma (Kevin Wilson)

Former Tulsa head coach Kevin Wilson is returning to Oklahoma as an offensive analyst, OUInsider first reported late Sunday night.

Wilson was Oklahoma's co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach from 2002-05, and its offensive coordinator, tight ends and fullbacks coach from 2006-10.

During that time, the Sooners won six Big 12 championships and played for three national championships. His 2008 offense was ahead of its time; playing a hurry-up style, the Sooners mixed a power run game with a deep passing game to score a then-record 716 points in 14 games. Oklahoma scored at least 61 points in a record five consecutive games from Nov. 1 to Dec. 6 of that season, and hit 58 points on Oct. 25, the week before the streak began.

Wilson isn't returning to Norman to put the Sooners back above the 700-point barrier. The 2024 Sooners scored 312 points in 13 games, as head coach Brent Venables bet the season on the promotion of Seth Littrell to play-caller and Jackson Arnold to quarterback. That bet went snake eyes; neither is with the program today.

As explained in detail last week, heading into a make-or-break 2025, Venables is doubling-down on his defensive acumen by appointing himself as defensive coordinator. That decision ceded near-total control to 30-year-old offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, who will have to teach his offense not only to the players but also to the staff, all of whom remain in place from last season.

Wilson can now provide help to Arbuckle, and also to Venables after depositing 96 games as a head coach at Indiana and Tulsa.

One might say Wilson's help will be invaluable, but that's not quite correct. If the Sooners improve enough to avoid a coaching change heading into 2026, we'll be able to put a precise dollar amount on the value Wilson provides to the staff.

As always, stay tuned to The Scoop for the latest.
