After a 2-4 start, including an 0-3 mark in conference play, Kansas has decided to make a change at offensive coordinator, letting go Doug Meacham just about a year and a half into his tenure with the Jayhawks.
Head coach David Beaty announced the change via a release.
"I appreciate Doug and all the work he put in during his time at Kansas. None of us are satisfied with the progress we are making on the offensive side of the ball. We hope that with this change we are better able to put our players in the best position to be successful," Beaty shared in the release.
Beaty notes that the coordination of the offense will be "a team effort" moving forward and that he will take on the responsibility of coaching the quarterbacks.
Just a few years ago, as the co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach at TCU, Meacham was a hot coaching prospect after turning the TCU offense into an effective and efficient Big 12 force, and had a number of intriguing opportunities, even garnering some interest for head coaching positions, but he eventually opted for the challenge helping David Beaty turn things around at Kansas.
Through six games, Kansas ranked 115th nationally in scoring offense, 113th in passing offense, and 93rd in total offense. One of the lone bright spots? The Jayhawks rushed for over 211 yards per game, good for 22nd nationally.
Many considered Beaty luring Meacham away as one of the more interesting coups of the 2017 off season, but things clearly just didn't work out in Lawrence for the two.
