Houston set for record breaking assistant coach salary pool (salary)

Following an 8-5 finish last fall, Houston is set to pay Dana Holgorsen's assistant coaches a record sum as they prepare to head to the Big 12.

The pool, which previously sat at $3.05 million, has undergone a 15% increase to $3.525 million for this fall, which is an all-time high the Houston Chronicle shares.

The salary pool bump includes salary increases for seven Cougar assistant coaches.

Associate head coach / defensive coordinator Doug Belk remains the highest compensated member of the staff, earning $1 million as he enters the final year of his deal, and defensive line coach Brian Early is set to make $350k in year two of his contract after making $300k last year.

New offensive line coach / run game coordinator Eman Naghavi inked a two-year deal worth $400k annually, while wide receivers coach Daikiel Shorts Jr. agreed to a three-year deal. Shorts is the recipient of a $100k pay bump from $150k in 2022 to $250k in 2023, and is set to earn $275k in 2024 and $300k in the final year of his contract in 2025, the report adds.

The rest of the staff signed new one-year deals.

Michael Burchett, who made $100k as an offensive analyst last fall, will now make $250k in his promotion to quarterbacks coach.

Assistant head coach Mike Jinks, who coaches the team's running backs, has received a pay bump from $250k to $300k, while assistant head coach / tight ends coach Corby Meekins also got a $50k bump from $250k to $300k as well.

Linebackers coach Archie McDaniel will make $275k after making $250k last year. Special teams coordinator Mark Scott went from $150k to $200k, and secondary coach David Rowe's salary remained the same at $200k.

The Coogs move to the Big 12 becomes official in just over a month, on July 1.

Dana Holgorsen enters year five at Houston 27-20 overall, and 20-7 over his last two seasons with the program.
