UPDATE >>The school has announced that defensive coordinator / defensive backs coach Okesa Smith and quarterbacks coach Reginald Cooper have been named interim head coaches.
The school also shared the following statement.
"Within the Department of Athletics, goals and expectations are set for each team," said George Williams, SAU Director of Athletics. "Athletes must meet the requirements for eligibility from the institution, the CIAA, and the NCAA to participate. Unfortunately, achieving eligibility is not always easy and our expectations are not always met. It is times like these that we have to re-evaluate and make changes that we feel are necessary."
"This has happened with the football program, and we feel that a change has to take place immediately," Williams added. "Our primary interest is always the well-being of the students."
Chavous, who deleted his previous tweet shared below, had the following message to share with local media, in an attempt to explain the situation.
St. Augustine (NC) head coach Tim Chavous tweeted this evening that he's been fired from his post following an 0-3 start to the season. The team has been outscored 148-21 in those games.
The tweet, which seems to direct blame to athletic director George Williams, was shared reportedly less than 10 minutes after Chavous was given the news of his dismissal by Williams.
No official announcement from SAU has been made on the future of Chavous yet.
Chavous was in his fifth season leading the program. Over the past several seasons, the team has finished 2-7 in 2018, 5-5 in 2017, 2-8 in 2016, and 1-9 in 2015.
