Bubba Schweigert steps down at North Dakota (bubba schweigert)

Bubba Schweigert, who just wrapped up his 11th season leading the Fighting Hawks, has stepped down from the head coaching role.

The school has announced that he will transition into a senior administrative role with the school.

Schweigert took the head coaching job at North Dakota back in 2014, and by 2016 he had led the program a Missouri Valley Conference title, a top 15 ranking, and a loss in the second round of the FCS playoffs.

He would go on to capture one more conference title, during the 2020-21 season affected by the pandemic, finishing 5-2 and ranked as high as #6 nationally at the end of the season.

In his nearly dozen seasons at the helm, he led ND to postseason appearances five times and leaves the school with a 66-57 record, including a 37-32 mark in the ultra-tough Missouri Valley.

A longtime North Dakota assistant coach with fifteen years under his belt, he left his post as the team's defensive coordinator to become the head coach at Minnesota Duluth (D-II). There, he spent four seasons as head coach, going 22-21 before leaving for Southern Illinois where he went back to coordinating an FCS defense.

He spent six seasons at SIU before returning to North Dakota as the program's head coach heading into the 2014 season.

This fall, after losing 21-3 against Iowa State to open the year, they  beat #4 Montana and then rattled off three more wins, ranking as high as #7 in the country.

However, after losing to rival NDSU in early October, ND found a way to beat Northern Iowa but ultimately ended their season on a five-game losing streak, with their final three games coming against top 15 competition (SDSU, South Dakota, and Illinois State).

Schweigert, the fourth-winningest head coach in school history, will remain in the head coaching role until a replacement is named. That search is set to begin immediately.

As always, stay tuned to The Scoop for the latest.
