Browns to employ NFL's first female position coach (callie brownson)

On the same day Vanderbilt's Sarah Fuller became the first woman to play Power 5 football, the Cleveland Browns also made history of their own.

The club announced that Callie Brownson will serve as tight ends coach for Sunday's game with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Brownson will pinch hit for tight ends coach Drew Petzing, who will remain in Cleveland after his wife gave birth Saturday morning.

Brownson is head coach Kevin Stefanski's chief of staff.

“I think she’s a go-getter," Stefanski said upon Brownson's appointment back in January. "She’s self-motivated. She’s going to put all of her energy into this gig. What’s exciting for me is ultimately I want to develop young coaches. She’s someone that has worked on the offensive side of the ball, worked on special teams, has a great knowledge of the game and I want to let her expand that knowledge and develop her as a head coach.”

New NFL rules require teams to announce when coaching staff members will miss games as well as their replacements.

The 7-3 Browns are looking to secure the club's first playoff appearance since 2002, which would be its second such trip since the franchise's 1999 revival.

The 2020 campaign has been a groundbreaking season for women in football. In September, Brownson was involved in the first NFL game to have female coaches on both teams and a female official.
