An update for those hopeful for an alternative to NFL onside kicks (xfl)

For the past three seasons, NFL owners have tabled the discussion around alternatives to the onside kick, despite leagues like the XFL experimenting with situations like a 4th and 15 from a team's own 25-yard line getting overwhelmingly positive reviews from fans.

Back in March, the onside kick alternative topic was on the docket to be talked about among team owners, but at the end of that meeting Tom Pelissero shared that the feeling was that more discussion was needed.

Today, during their annual spring meeting those discussions took place, and, well, those talks have now stalled for a fourth consecutive season.

There are variations of that same type of alternative that have been discussed, including the 2020 proposal from the Broncos to allow a one-time opportunity to skip the onside for a 4th and 15 from their own 35. When that didn't gain enough steam, the Eagles proposed a 4th and 15 from the team's own 25 that could be used twice in any quarter, and the team doesn't have to be trailing to attempt it.

If history is any indication, another tweaked proposal will likely make its way in front of owners again this time next year. The looming question is what proposal or data do they need to see in order to move conversation forward?
