The XFL season was cut short, and the league has now suffered its first coaching defection.
Air Force has announced the hiring of Jonathan Himebauch as tight ends coach; he was previously the offensive line coach of the Tampa Bay Vipers.
“Jonathan, Jessica and their family are such a natural fit for our football program and the Air Force Academy,” Troy Calhoun said in a statement. “Both the depth and breadth of his playing and coaching experiences, along with his very sturdy leadership qualities are perfect for the Falcons.”
Himebauch replaces Jonathan Wallace, who left last month to join the Kansas staff. His AFA salary was not public information.
Air Force represents Himebauch's fourth tour of duty in the Mountain West. He broke into college coaching as a GA at UNLV from 2000-01, then returned to Vegas as the Rebels' offensive line coach in 2004. He spent 2006-08 as the offensive line coach at San Diego State, and 2016 in a similar role at Nevada.
Before working in the XFL, Himebauch coached the Alliance of American Football's San Antonio Commanders in 2019 and spent 2017-18 coaching the offensive line for the CFL's Toronto Argonauts.
