Minnesota Vikings reportedly hiring recently promoted Big Ten coordinator (NFL)

About a week ago, Maryland and head coach Mike Locksley formally announced a promotion for Chili Davis.

Named the Terps assistant special teams coordinator back in February of 2025, Davis was officially elevated to the role of special teams coordinator at Maryland last week after Locksley decided to restructure a number of staff duties including Andre Powell shifting his focus to just the running backs after coordinating the special teams last fall.

Davis brought a decade of coaching experience to his new role in College Park, after previously working at college programs spanning coast to coast including Kansas State, Florida A&M (FCS), Washington, New Mexico State, Louisiana Tech, Fordham (FCS - NY), and Campbell (FCS - NC).

He also spent a year with the Rams as a special teams assistant working under Sean McVay.

Now, Davis is reportedly heading back to the NFL.

CBS Sports shares that Davis is joining the staff of Kevin O'Connell and the Minnesota Vikings, where he will be serve as an assistant special teams coordinator.

Outside of special teams, Davis has worked with a number of offensive positions at his college stops including inside receivers, tight ends, and running backs and has also coached on the defensive side of the ball, working as the corners coach at Fordham back in 2016.

With the Vikings, Davis joins a special teams unit led by Matt Daniels, who has held the special teams coordinator title since 2022 with the organization. A former safety in the league, Daniels previously worked as an assistant special teams coach with the Cowboys prior to joining the Vikings franchise and is an original member of O'Connel's staff in Minnesota.
