Sources: Mike Locksley adding 100-game winner, state champion high school coach to Maryland staff (Featured)

Entering into a pivotal 2026 campaign in his second tenure atop the Maryland football program, Terps head coach Mike Locksley is turning to one of the best prep programs in the region to fortify his Maryland staff.

Sources tell FootballScoop that Archbishop Spalding coach Kyle Schmitt is departing the school to take over as the tight ends coach in Locksley's Maryland Terps regime.

While Schmitt is coming off of a state championship-winning season at Archbishop Spalding, Locksley faces a de facto must-win campaign in the coming year. Maryland has slumped to consecutive eight-loss seasons in each of the past two years after posting eight-win campaigns in 2022-23; the Terps are 10-21 in their last 31 games.

Schmitt guided the prep powerhouse some 20 miles from the University of Maryland campus to consistent postseason success, a run that culminated with the recent Maryland State Championship -- a win that punctuated the program's four-straight Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association titles.

During his oversight of the program, Schmitt also has developed numerous players in four-year college prospects.

Locksley has made changes on both sides of his coaching staff since Maryland concluded a disappointing 2025 season on an eight-game losing streak -- all to Big Ten Conference foes.

The Terps are scheduled to open their 2026 season against Football Championship Subdivision program Hampton before traveling to UConn a week later. The Huskies will feature first-year coach Jason Candle, hired away following a successful run at Toledo. Candle replaced Jim Mora Jr., who exited UConn to take over at Colorado State.

The Capital Gazette (Annapolis) newspaper was the first to report on Schmitt's impending departure.
