Sources: Emerging FCS power lands Big 12 assistant (Featured)

In his debut season as head coach, Travis Bush guided UT-Rio Grande Valley to the type of first-year success seldom seen in college football.

The Vaqueros amassed nine wins, were undefeated at home and multiple times received votes in the AFCA Coaches Top 25 Poll.

Now, Bush is eyeing more in 2026.

With Bush already earning a contract extension through the 2030 season, UTRGV is poised to make a significant addition to its offensive staff, FootballScoop has learned.

Sources tell FootballScoop that Bush is hiring Theron Aych into a key offensive role after Aych had spent the 2025 season as wide receivers coach for the Big 12 Conference's Oklahoma State Cowboys.

Per sources, Aych is expected to be the co-offensive coordinator in Bush's UTRGV program.

He's also been an offensive coordinator at Tennessee State, as well as worked at the University of Arizona, another Big 12 program, for four seasons from 2017-20.

Bush got his first collegiate head coaching job in Dec. 2022 when he was hired to build from the ground up the Vaqueros new program.

A former Buffalo Bills assistant who hails from Texas, Bush also has extensive experience as a college assistant coach and high school head coach in Texas. There, he turned around two programs -- generating a nine-win season early in his tenure at Canyon High School (Texas).

His inaugural UTRGV team was among the top-30 in the NCAA's FCS in scoring margin and also defeated a Prairie View A&M team that would win its conference and compete in the Celebration Bowl - the HBCU national championship game - last month in Atlanta.

Bush's UTRGV program is set to open Year 2 on Aug. 29, 2026 in a Week Zero game against UT-Permian Basin. The Vaqueros then travel to Jeff Traylor's UT-San Antonio program a week later before opening Southland Conference play on the road at Nicholls on Sept. 12.
