Sources: Utah, Morgan Scalley find new offensive coordinator (Featured)

Morgan Scalley has his first offensive coordinator as Utah's head coach.

Sources tell FootballScoop that Scalley is staying in the Beehive State and hiring Kevin McGiven away from the Utah State Aggies.

Scalley was elevated to the top role at Utah as Kyle Whittingham departed to take over at Michigan. Whittingham took with him Jason Beck, Utah's previous offensive coordinator.

In McGiven, Scalley gets a veteran presence to direct the offense with decades of experience. McGiven began his coaching career in 1998 at Louisiana Tech and has coached in the state of Utah at BYU, Weber State, Utah State twice and Southern Utah, as well as in the high school ranks in the Orem, Utah, area where McGiven grew up.

McGiven does have previous Power Conference experience as an offensive coordinator; he coached under Gary Andersen at Oregon State last decade; he had been a staple on staff at San Jose State for multiple head coaches before departing to join Bronco Mendenhall's Utah State staff a year ago.

The Aggies in 2025 advanced to the postseason but closed with an 6-7 record; still, their offense was hardly to blame. Utah State this past season averaged 31 points per game under McGiven's guidance. A significant problem was a Utah State defense that surrendered an average of 28.7 ppg.

He's coached in seven bowl games during his assistant coaching career and also helped a pair of Football Championship Subdivision programs -- Weber State and Montana State -- advance into the FCS Playoffs.

Scalley had been Utah's head-coach-in-waiting for a few years before Whittingham last month elected to step away from Utah -- but not away from coaching.

Whittingham then was hired in late December atop the scandal-ridden University of Michigan program. The Wolverines fired Sherrone Moore after just two seasons and amidst Moore's felony arrest as well an athletics department-wide probe into the "culture" of Michigan athletics.

Moore's firing came just months removed from the NCAA hammering ex-Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh with the organization's longest-ever 'Show Cause' penalty -- effectively a ban -- of a decade.

Utah hammered Nebraska on New Year's Eve in the Las Vegas Bowl to star the Scalley era and close out its 11-2 campaign.

The Utes will formally open the Scalley in 2026 with a Thursday night game on Sept. 3 against FCS program Idaho before nine days later hosting Arkansas, under new head coach Ryan Silverfield, in Salt Lake City.
