Sources: West Georgia working to hire AFCA Coach of the Year (Featured)

Monday, Presbyterian's Steve Englehart added another piece of history to his remarkable rebuild -- full build? -- of Blue Hose football.

Englehart was named the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) National Coach of the Year by the AFCA.

In doing so, Englehart becomes the first-ever winner from the Pioneer League in its 35-year history.

Now, Englehart is on the cups of seeking new heights at a different FCS program, several sources tell FootballScoop.

Architect of Presbyterian's 10-win season, Englehart is being targeted for the head coaching position at West Georgia University. Sources tell FootballScoop that West Georgia hopes to have a deal in place with Englehart by Wednesday.

The Wolves lost Joel Taylor to Mercer earlier this week after Taylor helmed the program for two years. Taylor had been a strong defensive coordinator at Mercer prior to taking over at UWG; he replaced Mike Jacobs, who returned to his native Ohio and took over Mid-American Conference program Toledo.

He's an NCAA Division I head coach at the FCS level just a few years removed from being out of the sport entirely and selling real estate in Florida. That's because his previous program, Florida Tech, was folded.

The Pioneer League is a non-scholarship athletics conference.

Presbyterian's 16 wins in its past two seasons combined under Englehart are more victories than the program had total from 2018 through 2023.

"This is a very special award to receive," Englehart said in a release earlier this week announcing his AFCA win. "And I am honored to help bring recognition to our team and (Presbyterian College) at large.

"This award is voted on by peers in the profession, so it's especially gratifying that our accomplishments were recognized on a national level."
