Clark Lea is signing a 6-year extension to remain at Vanderbilt, the program announced Friday.
ESPN reported the deal comes with "numerous assets" for the program in addition to a raise for Lea. Specific terms were not disclosed.
The extension comes as Lea has Vanderbilt in the top 15 nationally, with the Commodores knocking on the door of College Football Playoff access. The 9-2 'Dores are looking to conclude a 10-win regular season at No. 19 Tennessee on Saturday (3:30 p.m. ET, ESPN). Vanderbilt went 7-6 with a Birmingham Bowl victory last season. Overall, Lea is 25-35 and 10-29 in SEC play at Vanderbilt, but 16-8 and 8-7 over the past two seasons. He was the SEC's Coach of the Year in 2024.
The turnaround Lea has executed at Vanderbilt has been swift and dramatic. Taking the job in 2021, Vanderbilt went 2-10 (0-8 SEC) in 2021 and 2023. Three key additions led to the turnaround: hiring Tim Beck as offensive coordinator, Jerry Kill as chief consultant to the head coach, and the transfer of Diego Pavia at quarterback. Vanderbilt now leads the offense at 7.4 yards per play.
That success led Lea to be a secondary candidate at Florida and LSU, but he has opted to remain at his alma mater.
The task after this season will to keep Vanderbilt at its historically-high level, and Vanderbilt has agreed to supply additional resources to help make that happen.
“Clark Lea embodies what is possible at Vanderbilt, and I am proud to continue this journey with him leading our football program,” AD Candice Storey Lee said. “From the very beginning of Vandy United, we unapologetically set out to build a model to sustain excellence in athletics and today simply reaffirms our commitment. Our focus is consistently competing at the highest level— with our values and identity as our firm foundation. As Coach Lea often says, our mission is winning. We deeply believe that we can do it all. With our alignment and partnership here at Vanderbilt, we can and we will.”
“Clark Lea’s success is demonstrating what we believe is possible for Vanderbilt football and the entire university,” said Chancellor Daniel Diermeier. “We set our aspirations high, attract the best people, and create an environment where they can succeed. Coach Lea has shown all of us what is possible when we make no small plans and have the determination and fortitude to execute them. His leadership is a powerful example of why we invest boldly in athletics and why our aspirations continue to rise.”
