Virginia Tech seeking a deal with James Franklin

As soon as Penn State made the decision to cut James Franklin loose, the speculation immediately turned to will Virginia Tech grab him. 

In the days thereafter, sources told FootballScoop the interest from Virginia Tech was sincere; the question was would James be willing to commit to that one early on. 

Over the past few weeks James Franklin and his agents have been evaluating his potential fit for all of the openings current and expected. In reality, James is a fit at several. There have been discussions and Virginia Tech has been patient. 

However, that patience appears to be wearing a bit thin. This morning word has gone out that Virginia Tech and James Franklin are in talks and that a decision is expected in the coming days. Virginia Tech is ready to have their next head football coach, the question remains, is James Franklin ready to accept this job. 

With James' money primarily coming from Penn State (offset by whatever he accepts at future employment), any negotiation with Virginia Tech would be fairly easy and school friendly. Thus, it feels pretty clear what is happening with this morning's leak. Virginia Tech is ready for James to stop surveying the market and get on board. 

If James wants to be Virginia Tech's next head football coach the opportunity is there. If he isn't ready to commit, Virginia Tech deserves to know that as well.

James Franklin, a 30-year football coaching veteran at both the collegiate and NFL level, was appointed Penn State’s 16th head football coach on January 11, 2014 and enters his 15th season as a collegiate head coach. Franklin’s career head coaching record is 125-57 and is one of three active FBS coaches with a 68-plus winning percentage and 14-plus years of head coaching experience. Franklin attributes his success on the field to the strength of his teams’ dedication to four core values: positive attitude, great work ethic, compete in everything you do and must be willing to sacrifice.

Under Franklin’s direction, Penn State has finished in the top 12 of the final College Football Playoff rankings in seven of the last nine seasons, has earned berths in seven New Year’s Six bowl games with four wins and won the 2016 Big Ten Championship. Franklin guided the Nittany Lions to a school-record 93% graduation success rate in the most recent GSR report and a perfect single-year 1,000 APR for the 2018-19 school year.
