With two games remaining on its schedule, sources tell FootballScoop that Highland Community College has fired head coach Tom Minnick, offensive coordinator Caden Coulson, and defensive coordinator Caleb Young, and the school will meet Wednesday afternoon to consider canceling the remainder of its season.
Located in Highland, Kan., in the far northeast corner of the state near the Missouri and Nebraska state lines, Highland is 0-9 on the season while playing in the highly-competitive Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference. The Scotties fell 20-13 to No. 14 Garden City on Saturday, but have lost games this fall by scores of 37-6, 63-27, 35-6, 26-0, 51-0, and 38-3. At one point this season, the Scotties went four consecutive games without scoring a touchdown, including a back-to-back shutouts.
Highland is scheduled to play its home finale against Hutchinson on Saturday, and then conclude its season at Iowa Western on Nov. 22.
Minnick is an NJCAA Coaches Association Hall of Famer with five career bowl victories, including six conference championships during an 11-year run at Arizona Western. Coulson and Young do not have bios listed on the HCC website. Minnick and his staff were hired in April, and sources told FootballScoop the administration assured the coaching staff this season would be used as a Year 0 due to their late start date and multiple spending freezes heavily impacted their ability to build the roster.
Clearly, Highland's thinking evolved over the course of the season.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned to The Scoop for the latest.
Afternoon update> Sources tell FootballScoop Highland leadership made the decision this afternoon that they will play the final two games as scheduled and communicated that decision to the team this afternoon.
