Friends, we're gonna file this one under, "Man, what?"
I believe it more than fair to say this website supports the coaching profession. I further believe it is fair to say that the large majority of people who coach football do it for the right reasons.
However, every now and then you run across a story and you just sit back and think, "Man, what?"
In today's edition, we head to the great state of Mississippi where the following headline caught our attention:
Murrah football assistant coach arrested in drug trafficking investigation
According to a press release from the Rankin (Miss.) County Sheriff Office's Facebook page, on Monday Robert Tyreke Landers was arrested at his home after a search revealed 13 one-pound bags of marijuana and seven pounds of methamphetamine. Landers was caught as part of a joint investigation between the Rankin County Sheriff's Office, the Madison (Miss.) Police Department, and the US Postal Service. He has been arrested on charges of alleged drug trafficking.
When not allegedly dealing pot and meth, Landers was the defensive coordinator for the Murrah High School football team in Jackson, Miss. The Mustangs concluded a 1-10 season last week. There is no indication Landers's side gig had any connection to his main job.
“While this arrest did not occur on a school campus and is not directly connected to Jackson Public Schools, we recognize the seriousness of the allegations and are unable to comment further at this time,” Jackson Public Schools executive director of public engagement Sherwin Johnson told the Mississippi Clarion-Ledger.
“We will continue to work with and cooperate with all our law enforcement partners to reduce the availability of drugs, not only in Rankin County but the metro area,” Sheriff Bryan Bailey said. “Our continued goal is to have a safe, secure community in which we can all live, raise our families, and retire.”
According to Landers' bio on Murrah's website, in addition to his role as defensive coordinator on the football team, Landers also taught "Health" at the school. Again, "Man, what?"
For those wondering, under Landers' watch, the Mustangs allowed: 45, 47, 52, 42, 50, 44, 35, 45, 55, 42 and 56 points in their ten losses this season. They did manage to win one game vs Provine 21-6. No idea if Landers coached in that game. We'll leave it at that.
One last time, Man, what?
