Continue to wonder if Nick Saban ever will be 'College Football Czar.'
Ignore Lane Kiffin as unofficial 'College Football Spokesman' at your own peril.
Ole Miss' ever-candid, perpetually transparent-speaking coach was at it again Wednesday afternoon on the Southeastern Conference's weekly coaches' Zoom call.
On the heels of his team's first loss and with the first official College Football Playoff rankings arriving in 13 days on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2025, Kiffin fielded a direct question about how he would like to see the second-ever 12-team CFP field selected.
"First off, I'm not even thinking about that," Kiffin said. "You're asking me a question, and I'm going to answer it. Not because i'm thinking about it. And, i've mentioned this before.
"What would (Las) Vegas (casinos/oddsmakers) do? They're the best at what they do by far. Way better than any committee. Way better than ... anybody could."
Kiffin drilled home on the point that Vegas basically doesn't give a damn about conference affiliation; its oddsmakers evaluate raw data and establish gambling lines, favorites and underdogs, based on said data.
"When you look at teams, and you're (asking) this team or that team and comparing them ... If it was a neutral game, what would Vegas make the spread?," Kiffin asked. "And that should tell you who the better team is.
"What would Vegas make the spread? And then if you had to bet your own money, your kids' college funds. Who would you bet on? On a money line. So ⦠without the points. To me, that⦠that tells you a lot."
Kiffin, who answered an earlier question and indicated he believed the SEC deserved as many a five teams in the upcoming 12-team field (more than 40%), had his final mic-drop moment for the 'Vegas Plan.'
"Who would Vegas make as a favorite when you're looking at the teams, and on a neutral site," Kiffin asked. "That would be the best way to determine who the best teams are.
"And Vegas doesn't go, well, there's already this many from this conference, so this team probably shouldn't go. There you go."
College football coaches, staffers and fans: there you go. It's still more than a dozen days until the very first 12-team CFP rankings are unveiled for the 2025 season -- and still 46 days until the final rankings, as well as the 12-team field, is unveiled Sunday, Dec. 7, 2025.
Let the gamesmanship -- and politicking -- commence.
