Longest win streak in the country extends to 70 games following controversial call (high school)

The home of the longest winning streak in high school football has survived another week.

Marion Local HS (OH) won their 70th game in a row last Friday night, but it was not without significant controversy.

After falling behind 7-0 after the first quarter to Versailles HS (OH), Marion Local went into halftime down 13-7 after Versailles missed an extra point attempt.

Coming out of halftime, Versailles scored again and went for two, but came up short, to extend their lead to 19-7

But Marion Local was able to put together a strong last part of the third quarter, and with inside of five minutes left in the game, facing a five-point deficit, Marion Local threw up an absolute prayer on fourth and seven.

Was it caught? Or did the pass hit the ground and a solid acting job by the receiver sold it just enough to keep the nation's longest win streak alive?

Take a look at the play in question, and take note of just how long it takes the officials to make a call one way or the other - albeit with absolutely zero confidence.

If you had any question as to whether the ball hit the ground or not, this angle should make it as clear as can be - that was not a catch.

Officials determined that the catch was made, and with under three-minutes remaining the Flyers threw a touchdown in the back corner of the end zone to take the lead 20-19.

Thanks, at least in-part, to that missed extra point and failed two-point conversion, Marion Local would hold on for the win after picking off a pass as Versailles scrambled to get into field goal position.

The win was just the second game that was even relatively close for the Flyers on the year. They beat South Adams (OH) 56-0, and then Crestview (OH) 63-0 before squeaking out a 21-14 win over St. Henry (OH). In the two games leading up to this latest win they thumped St. John's (OH) 61-0 and New Bremen (OH) 40-7.

Give Versailles a ton of credit for the 19 points scored, as Marion Local had allowed just 21 points in their previous five games combined, while outscoring their opponents 241-21 leading into the matchup.
