Where Iowa State might look for their next head coach

Paul Rhoads is an excellent coach and a terrific motivator. Paul Rhoads also only won 32 games in seven seasons as head coach of the Cyclones.

Some of that is talent related and some, it might be argued, was scheme driven.

Two sources FootballScoop has spoken with over the past month have noted that ISU AD Jamie Pollard has been keeping his eyes on Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo. Niumatalolo's unique offensive scheme is sound, hard to prepare for and has succeeded with a less "traditional" talent than many opponents.

Niumatalolo has a terrific job at Navy; but this is a huge hire for Pollard and the chatter has been that ISU will pay up to get their guy. If Iowa State can make the contract right, one has to think Niumatalolo would strongly consider the option if presented.

Navy is 9-1 (only loss was at Notre Dame) and has games remaining at Houston and vs Army; before their inevitable bowl game, which could be a big one.

In eight years at the helm, Niumatalolo has guided Navy to an average of over 8 wins per season.

With that said, there is no doubt Pollard's phone will be ringing all day with ideas and suggestions. As things begin to happen, we'll keep you posted on The Scoop.
