If you want to play defensive line for Derek Mason at Vanderbilt, the bar is set pretty high. Before taking the job at Vandy, Mason's defensive line units were some of the most ferocious in the country at Stanford, often stifling some of the best offenses in the country (like Oregon).
In Nashville, Frank Maile has been tabbed with overseeing the defensive line unit, and to live up to the standard that Mason has for his defensive unit, Maile is looking for three things from recruits and current players.
"The three things that I look for when watching film are #1, explosiveness off of the ball. His get off. I want to see how he attacks the line of scrimmage."
"#2 is what he does with his hands. Is he natural with his hands? Is he physical? Is he violent with his hands? How does he use them? And then #3, I'm looking for a great motor on the field."
"A lot of that just comes back to me and tell me about his work ethic and who he is. So that's what I'm looking for when I'm watching film, but at the end of the day, I want tough, blue collar kids with great work ethic and great character."
