Brett McMurphy of ESPN is reporting, and we can confirm, that Butch Davis has agreed to become the new ehad coach at FIU. FIU becomes the second program to fill their vacant head coaching job, joining Fresno State who announced Jeff Tedford as their new head coach.
McMurphy reports that Davis has agreed to a 5-year deal.
Davis returns to the greater Miami area, where he worked as the defensive line coach at the University of Miami from 1984-88, helping the Hurricanes win the 1987 national title, and brought the school back to national powerhouse status as head coach from 1995-2000 before accepting the head coaching job for the Cleveland Browns.
A highly respected recruiter returning to a talent-rich environment, Davis produced multiple first-round picks at North Carolina from 2007-10 before he was forced to leave in July 2011 amid academic scandal. Davis spent the 2012 season as a special assistant to Greg Schiano with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
In 10 seasons as a head coach at the college level, Davis carries a 63-43 record at UNC and Miami, with a share of three conference titles and seven bowl appearances.
Davis takes over for Ron Turner, who went 13-21 in four seasons. Prior to Turner, Mario Cristobal led the program to their only bowl game.
