11:30 central time update:
The university has now announced that Sperbeck has resigned effective immediately and that Sears will serve as interim head coach for the 2014 season.
Original post:
Sources told FootballScoop Friday morning that Sacramento State head coach Marshall Sperbeck has resigned. Sperbeck told the team and coaching staff earlier this morning, sources indicate.
Sperbeck took over at Sacramento State in 2007 after leading Foothill College (JC - CA) to a 109-53 record with 11 postseason appearances in 15 years. He guided the Hornets to a 35-44 mark in his seven seasons, the second best winning percentage and victory total through seven seasons in school history.
Sources also indicated that newly-hired defensive coordinator Jody Sears will take over as interim head coach.
Sears, of course, was hired as defensive coordinator at Weber State in 2012 before being elevated to head coach following John L. Smith's abrupt return for Arkansas. He led the Wildcats to 4-19 record mark in his two seasons.
Sears is best known for his work as defensive coordinator at Eastern Washington from 2003-07. He then followed Paul Wulff to Washington State, where he coached cornerbacks for four seasons and served as co-defensive coordinator in three of those seasons.
Sacramento State opens its 2014 season at Incarnate Word on August 30.
As always, we'll update when we have more information.
