The Buffalo Bills have relieved head coach Rex Ryan of his duties. Anthony Lynn, who started the season as running backs coach before being promoted to offensive coordinator following the dismissal of Greg Roman, will serve as the franchise's interim head coach moving forward.
Assistant head coach / defensive assistant Rob Ryan has also been relieved of his duties as well.
As the head coach of the Bills, Ryan went 8-8 his first season, and was 7-8 this season heading into their season finale against his former team, the New York Jets. In two season, Ryan was 15-16 with no playoff appearances.
Prior to being named head coach in Buffalo, Ryan was the head coach of the Jets, where he went 46-50 overall, highlighted by a 9-7 finish in year one, and an impressive 11-5 finish in 2010 that ended with a loss to the Steelers in the AFC title game. In the four years that followed with the Jets, Ryan would never again make the playoffs, and never finish above .500 before being dismissed in 2014 after a 4-12 mark.
Prior to landing his head coaching job with the Jets, Rex was an accomplished defensive coordinator in the league with the Baltimore Ravens. Before that, Ryan was a defensive coordinator around college football (Kansas State, Oklahoma, Cincinnati, Morehead State, New Mexico Highlands), and spent a few years with the Arizona Cardinals as an assistant coach with the defensive line and linebackers.
Ryan's departure marks the third NFL head coaching job to come open this off season, joining the LA Rams, and Jacksonville Jaguars.
