USA Today releases its annual assistant coach salary database -- with strength coaches

USA Today on Wednesday released its annual survey of assistant coaching salaries -- and it's already outdated. Texas A&M's John Chavis is listed as the leader at $1.558 million, only to be immediately surpassed by LSU's Dave Aranda and his new $1.8 million salary. The first $2 million coordinator will be upon us soon.

As always, the database is great work by the folks at USA Today. The top-10, updated with today's information and reflecting current employment status:

  1. Dave Aranda, LSU -- $1.8 million
  2. John Chavis, Texas A&M -- $1.558 million
  3. Brent Venables, Clemson -- $1.431 million
  4. Lane Kiffin, Alabama -- $1.4 million
  5. Todd Grantham, Louisville -- $1.3 million
  6. Bob Shoop, Tennessee -- $1.115 million
  7. Kevin Steele, Auburn -- $1.11 million
  8. Geoff Collins, Florida -- $1.05 million
  9. Jeremy Pruitt, Alabama -- $1 million
  10. Noel Mazzonne, Texas A&M -- $965,000

In today's age of point-a-minute offenses, defensive coordinators are now commanding higher price tags than offensive coordinators. Though, to be fair, everyone's price is rising these days.

New to this year's database -- strength coaches.

  1. Chris Doyle, Iowa -- $625,000
  2. Scott Cochran, Alabama -- $525,000
  3. Mickey Mariotti, Ohio State -- $520,000
  4. Sal Alosi, UCLA -- $410,000
  5. Jeff Dillman, South Carolina -- $400,000
  6. Rob Glass, Oklahoma State -- $395,000
  7. Paul Jackson, Ole Miss -- $375,000
  8. Joey Batson, Clemson -- $368,000
  9. Vic Viloria, Florida State -- $362,000
  10. Rohrk Cutchlow, Missouri -- $360,000
