Tim DeRuyter will not return at Fresno State (Featured)

UPDATE>> Fresno State has formally announced the news and added that assistant head coach for offense and offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau will serve as the program's interim head coach moving forward.

After a 1-7 start to his fifth season leading the program, sources tell FootballScoop that Tim DeRuyter will not return at Fresno State. ESPN, and a number of other outlets are now reporting the same.

An official press conference has been called by athletic director Jim Bartko for later today.

DeRuyter's tenure on the west coast got off to a great start, going 9-4 in his first season in 2012, followed by an 11-2 finish in 2013, to compile a 20-6 record in his first two seasons as a head coach. The years that followed have not been kind to DeRuyter though and the program has seen a steady decline in wins, going 6-8 in 2014 (with a trip to the Hawaii Bowl), and a 3-9 ending to 2015 before the 1-7 start to this season.

The Bulldogs losses have come at the hands of Nebraska (43-10), Toledo (52-17), UNLV (45-20), Nevada (27-22). San Diego State (17-3), and most recently Utah State (38-20). Their lone win on the year came against FCS Sacramento State the second week of the year, and they've lost six straight since that point.

In about four seasons and a half seasons, DeRuyter was 30-30 at Fresno State. Prior to leading Fresno State, he had a successful career as a defensive coordinator at place like Ohio, Navy, Air Force, and Texas A&M.

Plenty of coaches will find this job attractive, as both DeRuyter and his predecessor, Pat Hill, proved that you can build a winner in the San Joaquin Valley. From a recruiting standpoint there is plenty of high school talent to visit just a short day-trip from campus, and Bulldog Stadium has no shortage of tradition to sell and the right guy could pitch the non-Power Five spoiler ticket to prospects with recent tradition not all that far back in the rear view mirror. It's also worth noting that the Bulldogs have around a dozen players currently on NFL rosters, which is pretty solid for a program outside the Power Five.

The opening marks the fourth open FBS job, joining LSU, Purdue, and FIU. Keep track of all college head coaching changes here, as they become official.
