" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gerard Martinez, Kliff Kingsbury is set to become the new offensive coordinator for Clay Helton. A few other outlets have communicated the same. However, NFL Insider Ian Rapoport notes that Kingsbury is still "vetting" both college and NFL offers.
FootballScoop sources also tell us this deal is not done and several other options are on the table for Kliff.
After being let go at Texas Tech, Kingsbury instantly became the hottest name on the open market for offensive coordinator jobs in college football and in NFL circles. He's a two-time winner of the FootballScoop Offensive Coordinator of the Year award while coordinating offenses at Houston and Texas A&M.
Kingsbury, a former Broyles award finalist, would arrive in LA after six seasons leading his alma mater at Texas Tech with a career record of 35-40.
Kingsbury will be tasked with resurrecting an offense that took a considerable step backward this season under Clay Helton after back-to-back double-digit win seasons. Helton has made a number of changes to his coaching staff recently, and Kingsbury provides them with a fresh offensive perspective after Helton took play calling duties from Tee Martin back in early October. Martin is one of the assistants included in that staff shake up.
After his playing career ended, Kingsbury landed an offensive quality control role with Kevin Sumlin at Houston for two seasons in 2008-09 before he was named co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2010-11. In 2012 he followed Sumlin to Texas A&M where he helped lead Johnny Manziel to the Heisman Trophy as on of the most exciting college players to watch in recent memory.
