Dave Clawson agrees to new long-term contract at Wake Forest (Featured)

After leading the program to three-straight bowl wins for the first time in school history, Dave Clawson is being rewarded with a new 8-year deal stretching through the 2026 season, the school has announced. Pete Thamel was among the first to tweet the news.

From the school's release:

"I'm honored to receive a long-term contract and want to express my appreciation to President Hatch and our Board of Trustees," said Clawson. "I am especially grateful to Ron Wellman, who hired me and helped our program to unprecedented success the last three years. I'm also excited that John Currie is returning to Wake Forest as the new director of athletics. He will be a catalyst in building on our momentum moving forward.

"Wake Forest is making a significant commitment to personnel, resources and facilities that will benefit the entire program and position us to remain successful. Our staff is thankful and determined to continue being a perennial bowl team with the goal of competing for championships."

In five seasons leading the Demon Deacons, Clawson is 28-35 and his bowl wins include triumphs over Memphis, Temple and Texas A&M. His last three seasons the program is 22-17 and the team has had some of the best offenses in school history the past two seasons.

Rebuilding programs has been a staple of Clawson's coaching journey. Before becoming the head coach at Wake Forest, Clawson led programs at FCS Fordham (29-29 over five seasons), Richmond (29-20 in four seasons) before breaking into major college football for one year as the offensive coordinator at Tennessee, and then as the head coach at Bowling Green from 2009-13. At BG, Clawson went 32-31 overall including 10-3 his final season before leaving for the Wake Forest job.

His best finish at Wake has been 8-5 with a 3rd-place finish in the Clemson-dominated ACC Atlantic Division in 2017.
