According to reports today, St. Cloud State (D-II - MN) has made the tough decision to drop their football program, citing budget concerns.
An official announcement from the school is expected later today, where more will become clear on what options are available for the players on the roster, and what will become of their promised scholarships.
The Huskies, who compete in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, finished 4-7 this season. In addition to cutting football, the golf programs (men's and women's) is also being cut at the school and men's soccer is being added.
After making it official, the school provided three reasons behind the decision: To align with title IX requirements, to ensure financial stability for the university and athletics, and to ensure compliance with NCAA bylaws.
The school provided no update on if the scholarships of current players on the roster would be honored in their release.
Another school, Minnesota-Crookston (who plays in the same league), is rumored to be dropping football as well. We can confirm that Crookston informed their staff yesterday of the unfortunate news.
In UMN-Crookston's release on the news, shared yesterday, they noted that they will continue to honor the scholarships of student athletes affected by the decision who wish to continue their education at the school, and assistance will be provided as they continue to navigate their future college careers.
